Cafe Du Monde is a French Quarter landmark and known to tourists world-wide for its fried dough sprinkled with powdered sugar is about to reopen next week, after being closed by Hurricane Katrina.

Cafe Du Monde always stayed open 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, only closing for Christmas. It sold its last beignet on Aug. 27, a little more than a day before hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans.

With only minimal damage, the lack of water and electricity shut Cafe Du Monde for many weeks but the long awaited reopening is set for Wednesday at 6 a.m. and both residents and relief workers are very excited.

Beignets are French-style doughnuts made from recipe brought to Louisiana by the Acadians. Their special coffee is served either black or au lait - mixed with hot milk and it's the dried chicory root that flavors and intensifies it.

The menu hasn't changed alot since their opening in 1852 and it's probably the one place where you can experience the authentic "taste of New Orleans." 24 x 7.

Owner Archie Casbarian, who also owns Arnaud's Restaurant, another New Orleans institution, arrived in the New Orleans French Quarter in 1966. He's been reported as saying that ending up at Cafe Dumonde after a night of New Orleans partying, is a well-known hangover cure."

Cafe Du Monde uses up 5 to 10 tons of flour every month.

50 f their 150 employees have been located and the fryers will be turned on about 5 Wednesday morning. There will be hot beignets for everyone. Cafe Du Monde's famous beignet mix is available to buy so you can take their speical treat mix home with you.
